Coming hot on the heels of the impressive Airtel ad for their Digital TV service, "Come home to the magic," its competitiors would be completely non plussed, you would think. Think again. Tata Sky Plus has held it's own against the Airtel ad, and in the process, made one think a thing or two about effective advertising.
With brilliant acting by Aamir Khan and a delicious Gul Panag matching him gesture to gesture, Ogilvy & Mather has got the combination of creativity and right acting, perfect. The ad's teasers showing Aamir getting his hands doughy in the kitchen generated the heightened interest in the viewers that every ad craves for.
The ad scores heavily on good acting and clearly bringing out the value proposition of the service. Without being preachy or boring, it shows an urban couple with the husband trying to woo his wife into giving him access to the TV as he does not want to miss the cricket match while he knows his wife would not let go of the remote for her favourite daily soap. Coming close to Aamir's most anticiapted movie - Ghajini - this ad served Tata Aky Plus well as it did Aamir to get some good publicity before his movie releases. The masses can ogle at Gul and Aamir while their discussion explains the value proposition. The tag line, Isko laga daala to life aur bhi jingalala, fits perfectly with the already eminently recognizable, Isko laga dala to life jingalala, tagline that Tata Sky has. The superb execution, brilliant acting, and feel goody nature of the ad is sure to be a hit and another feather in O&M's cap.
The ad began from where the teasers left off. Aamir returns home and rushes straight to the kitchen even as a bemused Gul, can't get enough of this vivacious beauty, relaxes herself on the couch reading the day's newspaper. The screaming headline makes Gul realize that a cricket match is on that night and that explains Aamir's newfound love for the kitchen's utensils.
She immediately confronts him with the newspaper and as it dawns slowly upon her that Aamir does the kitchen chores so that he could watch the cricket match, Gul immediately breaks into explaining the value proposition of Tata Sky Plus. Its feature of pause and continue and program recording.
Aamir listens to Gul with a look that perfectly suits a husband who has been barking up a wrong tree when the one he wanted to climb was right in his backyard. He immediately tricks Gul into giving him the remote and orders her to bring some coffee.
Eminently watchable and total value for money for the client, Tata Sky plus.
